How to Start a Community Garden Cheap
Most people who buy land from us already know what they will do with their parcel. For some it is to build their dream home for retirement, and others simply plan to hold onto it solely for investment to resell down the road. Yet there are some people who buy land because they would like to make a difference and do something beneficial with it. In this growing age of environmental awareness, many people are wondering what they can do to give back to the Earth. One productive use of a small plot of land is to start a community garden, also known as an urban garden in some cities. This blog is aimed at those of you interested in discovering the benefits of transforming a vacant lot into a beautiful and bountiful garden that nourishes the community.
Before we get into the details of the rewards of a community garden, did you know that today most of our food comes from over 1,250 miles away or more? In the U.S., the number of acres of land used to grow food is decreasing each year. There is now much less financial incentive to become a farmer. Currently, only approximately 19 cents of every dollar spent on food goes back to the farm, but that figure was more than double that amount back in 1975 at 40 cents per dollar. It is estimated that today only 1% of our population are farmers, compared to about 90% at the turn of the century. Consequently, we are forced to import our produce from abroad. This is not at all economical and one of the reasons why the cost of food fluctuates so much. If the price of gas goes up, the price of transporting food goes up, and we all pay for that increase at the grocery store check-out line. What's more is that these foreign sources may not be as reliable or even available at all to us in the coming future.
This brings us back to why community gardens are so important. Smaller plots of land in urban areas work very well since it gives people who don't have their own backyards the chance to grow their own vegetables. Community gardens can help people reclaim their neighborhoods, and can bring some much needed greenery to an urban landscape, potentially turning an trash-strewn eyesore of a vacant lot into a beautiful oasis that everyone passing by can enjoy. This not only provides a catalyst for neighborhood and community development, but it also improves the quality of life in the area. Fruits, vegetables and flowers not only beautify the land, but also improves the quality of food available to those who grow it. Since 1945, the use of chemical pesticides on food grown worldwide has increased by ten times. Many people want to eat pesticide-free food, but often can't afford it from the store. Vegetable gardens produce fresh, organic, delicious and nutritious food which also helps reduce family food budgets.
Some of the benefits of community gardens are intangible, such as how gardens provide a venue for intergenerational recreation and social interaction for retirees. In-school and after-school gardening programs give young people a productive, educational and confidence-building activity that can then turn into a lifelong skill by encouraging self reliance. The variety of produce grown also can reflect the cultural identity of the people who planted the garden. Some community garden programs even donate the produce they grow to local hunger agencies to help feed the poor.

Where Can I Drive My Go Kart? Seems Illegal in Most Places
Most people get glassy eyed when they see a go kart (people who love go karts that is) and tend to forget about where in the world they are going to drive their go-cart.
Sometimes the images in your mind go to race tracks and passing Ferraris, but "Really now! Are you going to be driving this thing on a race track?"
I recieved this email from a reader about go karts (and sadly it is a common question)
Hi, I got stopped by a police officer for operating my go kart on the the sidewalk, and he said I could be charged with: Operating a vehicle without being licensed, driving to endanger, driving a non-certified vehicle, and told me I had to be over 18 to operate any gas powered anything. I understand now that I can't drive a go kart anywhere pretty much but where should I go?
Because the question "Where Am I Going To Ride This Go Kart?" was not asked at the outset, now you have a very depressed individual, considering getting rid of the gokart all together.
One issue is about "Where" the other about "Age."
I am not legal authority, but I can tell you some basics: Un=Liscensed motorized vehicles cannot drive on roads.
About the age, that varies from state to state.
You need to look into your state statutes and codes to get verification on legal data. Consult a local attorney for that informaton...
But that aside, it is a good idea to know where you will be driving this go kart.
In your driveway?
On your uncles farm?
(Obviously not on the street because that is against the law)
In cornfields?
In your yard?
Do you have a big enough yard to ride a go kart?
Are their laws against go karts in your neighborhood?
Have you permission to ride it in the parking lot across the street?
Riding a go kart involve more than just you on a gokart.
It affects people around you in the following ways:
- A go kart is a driving projectile.
- A "unknown talent" is setting its course.
- The coarse is not set, but can change from moment to moment.
In short a go kart coupled with a driver is like running with the bulls in Spain.
Those around the go kart have no clue as to whether it is going to strike them or not.
So before you get upset that you cannot drive it "anywhere" realize that people around you have to take on a burden. A burden of concern and care. Will they, or you get hurt?
There are Legalities
Additionally, the Go Kart is not legal on the roads for various reasons, primarily because of its low profile (people can't see you) and its lack of many other essential road handling and accident preventitive components.
This set of questions is probably the most difficult to acknowledge, because there are so many obstacles. And I don't mean trees and cars, I mean regulations about motor vehicles. You cannot just blast down the road with your go kart. Sounds like a fun idea, but in reality it is dangerous and against the law.
If you end up buying this go kart, or even making it, you may end up with a very depressing set of conclusions:
I can't ride it anywhere!
And even if I could, I can't put it in the car to get it where I want to ride (its too big)!
So ask the question first. Get an answer.
The answer maybe as simple as networking with some people to find a place to ride: ie your uncles farm! (but there is even more than just your uncle at stake there too...remember there are 10 questions, not six)
There are various go karting clubs out there and you can join them. You do not have to be a go kart racer to join these clubs, it is just place where you can enjoy the go kart. Be sure to get in contact with them in your area before investing in the go kart and all that goes with it (ie helmuts, gloves, suits, etc..)

Your Best Summer Holiday - 10 Reasons For Neuschwanstein Castle Region in Bavaria
If you can't make up your mind between mountains and beach, water sports and cycle tours, cultural sight seeing, wellness holidays and sampling a new cuisine, come and have it all in Schwangau and the Neuschwanstein Castle Region.

1. Romantic Beaches
You will find no less than 6 lakes in the immediate vicinity of Neuschwanstein Castle and Schwangau village. You will find everything from sandy beaches, pebble beaches and places where you enter the water from hide-away grassy patches between trees and shrubs. The water is exceptionally clean and you can often see down to the ground. The weather in summer is warm and temperatures can rise to 35 degrees Celsius.
2. Excellent Water Sport Opportunities
The best lake for water sports is the Forggensee, which is also the biggest of all the lakes. In summer you see a colourful display of sailing boat sails spread all over the lake Several sailing clubs and harbours can be found along the shore. Wind surfing, canoeing and pedal boats are also available and used frequently.
3. Bike trails through stunning nature
The whole Neuschwanstein Castle Region has hundreds of kilometers of marked bike trails off the main roads and along lakes, through forests and across fields. You can enjoy the gorgeous panoramic views while sharing your picnic with one of the grazing cows. Mountain bike trails also abound and allow you to reach the cosy mountain huts and their sun terraces for a cool beer. Bikes and helmets can be rented in several places in Schwangau village.
4. Visiting the fairytale castle "Neuschwanstein" and the medieval ruins
Castle Neuschwanstein has been build by King Ludwig II and is a "must-see" in the area. With more than 1 million tourists a year it is a major European tourist attraction and even inspired Disney to design what it is known as Cinderella Castle. To get there you can either walk up the mountain, cycle up, take the bus or the horse carriage. The path is well sign-posted. To avoid the crowds, book your ticketing in advance and hire a private horse carriage from one of the two Schwangau rental places to take you up.
There are many more castles and ruins in the Neuschwanstein Region and historically interested and culturally excited travelers will love their discoveries. Castle "Ehrenburg" hosts an annual "knights festival" with re-enactments and medieval food stands every year end July. It also offers treasure hunts for children and a museum where you can try on a knight's armour.
5. Plenty of hiking trails in the Alpine mountains and welcoming huts allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery.
There are 14 official hiking trails and tours from Schwangau allowing you to discover nature up close. You will master small challenges like steep rocky paths and windy trails through the mountain forests rewarding yourself with a cold drink and a hearty meal at one of the many mountain huts such as "Drehhuette" or "Rohrkopfhuette". Watch out for the black mountain lizards on your path; they look like little mountain crocodiles.
For a romantic overnight hike, start from the bottom of the mountain Tegelberg in Schwangau, hike up past meadows, forests and rocky parts to the summit of "Branderfleck", "Ahornsattel". You will finally reach your destination "Kenzenhütte", a mountain hut serving you a heart-warming hut meal, allowing you to enjoy a splendid sunset and providing you with a rustic place to spend the night. The next morning you can keep hiking back a different path or take the bus back down into the valley.
6. Wellness opportunities and Thermal Spa
For a day full of relaxation and wellness, try the royal thermal bath "Koenigliche Kristalltherme" in Schwangau. There are several heated inside and outside pools all connected to allow you an indulging water experience. Add a visit to one of the many saunas or the crystal caves.
